We are a cruising club. Many are happy to set off locally for day trips in ones and twos, and sometimes more. Others prefer to disappear to distant parts for weeks, or even months at a time. Reappearing in the autumn and being coerced to do a talk about their experiences. (in the last 12 months we've had members from Weymouth and Portland Cruising Association sailing in the North Sea, the Baltic, France, the Med, Biscay, Scillies, Ireland, and the Hebredies, not bad for a'little club' with a membership of just 140 people)
Several members race, often quite successfully. However, we do not race as a club. Neither do we have the burden of owning or leasing premises; we exist by the simple expedient of hiring access to the Royal Dorset Yacht Club once a week. Thus, considerably simplifying the tasks of the ‘officers' of the club. We have virtually no property, but we do have a very pleasant crowd of people.
It would be very hard to find a club with a more diverse breadth of boats than the WPCA. Our fleet lists nearly eighty different boats, from hardy day sailers to heavy cruisers, with a few fast fliers in between. We are pleased to see that the percentage of motor-cruisers is steadily increasing.
Joining in
Potential new members or anyone just embarking on the first steps of boating is very welcome to come to the club to say hello, Tuesday evenings 1930 -2300, upstairs in the RDYC, on the quayside. Do come more than once, it may take time to be noticed!
